Strained/pulled hamstring / Hamstring muscle injury
Rehab for the injury

Rehab program

Focus on training the rest of the body, so you do not lose your current mobility, stability, and strength. Find out what you can do from workout programs and exercise according to the level you have. Training the rest of the body accelerates healing of your injury for several reasons, two of which are increased nerve activity and circulation.

Description of strained / pulled hamstring

Hamstring muscle injury or a pulled or strained hamstring usually occurs due to the overload of one of the 3 muscles that make up the hamstrings (m. Semitendinosus, m. Semimembranosus and m. Biceps femoris). Diagnosis is readily done through 4 muscle tests. When the muscle warms up it becomes longer and more flexible, and the pain may therefore disappear. But when you finish your race / sport and have showered, etc. the pain begins again. The paradox is that the race / sport exacerbates the problem, but at the same time it is during the race / sport that pain decrease is actually experienced. Straining a muscle of the hamstrings is seen in many sports with an increased tendency for it to happen in football as it can be linked to an imbalance between the hamstrings and the hip flexor muscle or the rest of the hip. The pain typically occurs in placed where tendon and muscle connect and hurts when pressure is applied locally. If you do not loosen up the muscle, there is a risk of blood stagnation may form scar tissue / create weak areas in the muscle. The treatment is mainly exercise therapy that intends to reduce the “resting strain” in the muscle. However, you should also be aware that the injury can be related to imbalances elsewhere in the body.

Symptoms of strained / pulled hamstring
  • Soreness at the back of the thigh i.e. hamstring (m. Semitendinosus, m. Semimembranosus and m. Biceps femoris).
  • Pain during use or stretch of the muscles.
Examination of strained / pulled hamstring
  • The 4 muscle tests (Extension, Force, Pressure and Movement).
  • Explanation of the injury.
Treatment of strained / pulled hamstring
  • Acute the first 2-3 days, MCE, RICE or other acute techniques; the muscles rest.

After 2-3 days:

  • Rehab.
  • K-laser.
  • Thermo treatment or cryo therapy.
  • Massage.
  • Muskel energi teknik og anden behandling ved en Manuel terapeut, Idrætsskadeterapeut eller fysioterapeut.
  • Spascupreel (2 tabl. 3 g. daily for 9 days) as a muscle relaxant.
  • Kinesiology tape.
