Acute phase:

You should begin with the acute phase as described below, even if 12 hours or more have elapsed before you get started.

0-5 min. (or as soon as possible after injury occurs)

  • Elevate the elbow to over the heart
  • Apply tight compression band if you have it or squeeze your hands around the elbow.

5min-40min.

  • Lying down make movements with the elbow joint to the pain limit, thus allowing the fluid to be removed and the swelling to diminish as much as possible.

The rest of Day 1 and Day 2.

  • Keep a tight compression band on the injury for the rest of the day. However, make sure that it is not too tight in which case the arm and hand sleep or become numb.
  • Lying down make movements with the elbow joint as much as possible..
  • Use the elbow minimally and stop immediately at any onset of pain.
Sub-acute phase:

Day 3-100

  • Begin elbow rehab 1-4.
  • Use the elbow as normally as possible if there is no pain associated with it.
  • Use support bandages, sports taping or kinesiotape when you return to sports and exercise.
